Dow Jones Live Update – DJIA Live
What is the Dow Jones?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) was established by Dow Jones and company co-founder and Wall Street Journal editor Charles Dow on 26th May, 1896. Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) is the 2nd oldest stock market index in US, after the Dow Jones Transportation Average(DJTA), which was also established by Charles Dow himself.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) is also termed as Dow Jones or DOW, is one of the most popular stock market index in the USA. Dow Jones is nothing but a price-weighted average of the 30 most important market leading blue-chip company stocks in the US Stock exchange or American Stock exchange.
Dow Jones and company is one of the major and largest business and financial news in the world. Dow Jones and company is not a public listed company by itself, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) tracks public listed companies.
How the Dow Jones Index is calculated?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) was initially started to measure the price movements of stocks within the heavy industries like construction companies, and industries dealing with heavy goods. But today, there are most of the DJIA Index’s 30 companies have nothing to do with industrial goods.
The history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA), way back from May 26, 1896, at that time the Dow Jones index was consisting of only 12 stocks, and the index calculation was so simple. They used to add the price of all 12 stocks, divided by 12 that is it, Dow Jones index was ready, it was as simple as that. Collect the price of all the stocks of the index and divide it by the total number of stocks in the Dow Jones Index. In this way DJIA is almost like any other stock indices.
At present, the 30 blue-chip companies, viewed as the pioneers of the US economy, are choose and picked by the editors of the Wall Street Journal, a similar practice that was continuing since its initiation in the year 1896.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) is the price-weighted, means that the movement in stocks with higher prices impacts the Dow Jones index more than stocks with lower prices. The Dow Jones index’s daily value is not the true average of the 30 major stock prices, but its actually the sum of the prices divided by the Dow divisor, which is adjusted in cases like stock splits, spin-offs, and other structural changes to keep the stocks weighting constant and maintain the continuation.
The dow Jones index is a standout amongst the world’s most intently watched market benchmarks tracking or following the stock market activity. In spite of the fact that the DOW made to follow the performance of the US Industrial sector, at present it is viewed as an intermediary for the general stock market situations.
What is the Price-weighted index?
A price-weighted index means that the higher-priced stocks will have more influence on the index’s performance than the lower-priced stocks. To understand better, consider a fictional index consists of just 3 stocks, with share prices of $10, $30, and $60. Since higher-priced stock makes up 60% of the total consolidated value of the 3 stocks, a 10% rise in that particular stock’s price would raise the index by 6%. In contrast, a 10% rise in the lower-priced stock would result in only 1% rise in the index.
In the case of Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA), the prices of all 30 stocks present in the index are added together and then divided it by the Dow divisor, which keep changing over the time due to stocks splits and other major events. The Dow divisor is very much less than 1, which is why the value of the Dow Jones index is greater than the sum of the stock prices.
What time does the Dow Jones open?
The value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA) moves based on the stock prices, so the Dow Jones index value will change or moves only when the stock markets are open, and stock prices are moving. The US Stock exchanges are open from 09:30 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. Eastern Time, on Monday to Friday. During the market hours, the value of the Dow Jones is updated every second. When stock markets are closed, the value of the Dow index will be based on the closing prices of the most recent market session for the Dow Jones 30 stocks.
